Tents4Peace International Inc is a non-profit registered organization founded by an Australian woman, Anna Crotty.
Our main role is to provide short term emergency shelter to those who have been left homeless as a result of war or natural disasters.
As a secondary initiative, when it is possible and of high priority, Tents4Peace works towards providing basis infrastructure and life necessities such as orphanages, schools and sponsorship for those who were initially affected by the disaster.
We are a grass roots community group working in a voluntary capacity without major infrastructure or corporate support, sustained by ordinary people.
As a result we are able to mobilize quickly and effectively in the initial stages of a disaster to supply emergency life saving shelter. In some instances we have been able to operate in distressed areas before major aid organisations. We respond to critical situations anywhere in the world. We do not have any religious or political affiliations. We are sensitive to the need to honor the cultural integrity of those we assist, and we encourage ethical sustainability and self determination whenever possible. Our creed is to support others in helping themselves.
In 2006, we provided quality winterized tents to some 8,000 people who would have otherwise frozen to death in the remote parts of the North West Province of Pakistan and Afghanistan as a result of a devastating earthquake.
In 2008 we were able to supply tarpaulins, medical kits, basic cooking utensils and water purification tablets to over 3,500 homeless and sick in Burma (Myanmar), weeks before the larger organisations could reach them.
In 2007, we built an orphanage in Kabul, Afghanistan, which accommodates 50 children. The orphanage is sustained by our co-partners in Afghanistan, Mahboba's Promise.
Since 2007/8 we have run an orphanage on the outskirts of Kabul, known as Rumi House (which was initially lent to us by Khalil Gustad and now by Sidiq Rawi ) which supports 25 children and some widows. This orphanage is run by our Afghani co worker Rahalia ( a qualified teacher) and she mothers, educates and parents these children. We are continuing to raise money to build our own orphanage on land provided by the Afghan Government and we require ongoing sponsorship for these children.
Tents for Peace has been recently recognised with two new awards.
