October 2005 Earthquake in North West Province of Pakistan and Northern Afghanistan

Delivery of over 1000 winterised six to eight person tents in October 2005 to earthquake areas in North West Province of Pakistan and Northern Afghanistan.

Over one thousand winterised six to eight person tents were sent to Pakistan and distributed by the Fred Hollows Foundation following the October 2005 earthquake. The World Bank and the Secretary of the United Nations have publicly stated that the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan was worse than the combined effects of the tsunami in Indonesia and the cyclone in New Orleans.

All the tents were delivered to those in need thus saving many thousands of children's lives. 'Tents4 Peace' acted quickly and had their tents freighted into the remote areas before any other organisation. The tents were later used as makeshift schools and clinics.

Our original team of community workers included Anna Crotty and Ann Giblin.

October 2006 - more funds raised

Between October 2005 to October 2006 more funds were raised to supply tents or build semi permanent shelter in areas most in need in either the North West Province or Afghanistan.

This money was raised by Anna Crotty and Mary Xuereb.

Acquisition of land in Afghanistan

In conjunction with Mahboba's Promise parcel of land including a seven acres for school and clinic were transferred over to Tents for Peace and Mahboba's Promise to enable both organisations to support the destitute children of Kabul and to support the children in Pakistan who had lost their homes, parents and income in Pakistan as a result of the earthquake but wished to return to their homeland.

This was achieved by Mahboba Rawi and Anna Crotty.

Building of an orphanage in Kabul

An orphanage with the agreement and approval of Mahboba's Promise and Mahboba Rawi was commissioned by Tents for Peace to be built along side Mahboba's Promises orphanage in Kabul. This is a joint venture with Mahboba Promise with 'Tents for Peace' paying for the construction of the building and supporting sponsorship of the children who will be housed there.

Mahboba Rawi and her brother Sidiq have been involved with the building of this orphanage with Anna Crotty.

Fundraising Activities

Charity concerts in both Melbourne and Hobart were organised in April 2007 with Master of Sitar Khalil Gudaz to enable us to find funds for Tents for Peace activities in Afghanistan.

These concerts were organised by Anna Crotty and Fazila Hajeb with the generous help and commitment of Ngaire Green and Jane Byrne.
