Earthquake aftershock continues

The aftermath of the devastating earthquake which occurred in Yushu (Jyekundo) in the Tibetan autonomous region of Yushu has left many families still homeless, or forced to take shelter in plastic summer tents, which cannot be heated and will not offer protection in the forthcoming sub-zero winter temperatures. Lives are still at risk because of the officially projected delay of three years or more for reconstruction, and because of unsuitable shelter which cannot accommodate cooking or heating facilities.
There is still very little infrastructure to accommodate the sick and the aged, or those emotionally traumatized by the earthquake, as most of the medical centres were destroyed. Unless more suitable accommodation can be supplied, many people, particularly the sick, aged and the young, will die this winter.
Tents4Peace has chosen to continue with this project despite being aware of the situation in Pakistan, for the following reasons. We can make an immediate constructive difference NOW for families in Yushu , as we already have the infrastructure in place locally ready to operate. A family will be housed in their tent within 3 weeks of us receiving the money to purchase it. There are no NGO’s working in the area we have identified as lacking in adequate shelter.
We have sourced winterized tents from the closest city in the region. They are made from thick canvas, are water and wind proof, and are lined with wool enclosed in cotton. They are sized 20 square metres and are built to last 5-8 years. This design has been used with great success previously in this area. The tents cost $400 AUS each (subject to fluctuations due to increase in value of Australian dollar), which includes the cost of manufacture, transport and erecting the tent.
We have a team of local Tibetans on the ground who will assist us in organizing the manufacture, supply and transfer of tents to the areas of greatest need.
Tents 4 Peace has established a credible reputation supplying emergency shelter in situations of crisis. You can see previous projects elsewhere on our website.
We invite you to join with us on this project by purchasing a tent to house a family.
Although you may have made previous contributions towards relief efforts, you, or a group of like-minded people, may wish to extend your generosity and purchase a tent for a family, or for medical and hospital accommodation. Alternatively, you may wish to make a contribution toward a tent.
Your support could help to provide 30 winterised canvas wool-lined tents with a life span of 8 years to those who are facing a grim severe winter in flimsy unsuitable picnic tents.
Let us reassure the people of Yushu that while their story is no longer on the front page of newspapers, they will not be forgotten.
